Birds Eye View

Observation Site Description

Observation Site Description

Location: Eaton Canyon
Date: October 29, 2012

The area that we observed was very dry. We sat upon a giant log. The bark on the log was very crumbly and fell off when stepped on. On the ground we observed an abundance of dry dirt and dead leaves. We also saw plenty of holes in the ground, possibly from spiders, snakes, or rodents. We did not, however, see anything come out of the holes. It was pretty hot but there was a slight breeze. The sky was clear with the exception of a few small clouds. We could hear birds singing and also the rustling of the dead leaves on the ground. We found a pile of feathers that possibly came from a recently eaten bird. We also were able to find to owl pellet. We observed a lot of dead plants in our area. Along the ground, and occasionally on my shoes, red ants crawled. We did not see any animals while we were seated and observing. It was only after we had gotten up to head back to the bus that we ran into a deer (we didnt literally have a physical collision with a deer). Unfortunately, we failed to get any usable pictures or video recordings of the deer.

James' Observation Log

November 5, 2012

Temperature Unknown: Approximately 70 - 80°

11:30 - Started walking towards destination.

11:35 - Groups start to break up and Jack joins us because Jack says his partner refuses to go a lot farther away than he wants. Very hot and sunny.

11:40 - Walked through a large field of Mule Fat and observed what we thought to be rat houses
There was a slight breeze and only a few clouds in the sky

11:45 - After watching the rat homes we veered left and almost ran into poison ivy before I pointed it out. Kind of made us a lot more aware of our surroundings. To creeped out to notice weather.

11:50 - Approached a large and charred tree with a huge cactus growing behind it. The ground around the tree was a lot harder and devoid of vegetation. Seemed drier in that area.

11:55 - Keep on a trail and we found a shaded area with a bench and random arch in the middle of an open grass place. It was weird but great for recording observations. Very cool in the area due to the shade.

12:00 - Decided against walking up a hill when i heard that there were black widows on the hill. Stopped to make my birds eye view and the other. While sitting around I saw the wind blowing some trees. There were birds chirping and I even saw some grasshoppers. I noticed a owl pellet near us and went to examine it. I took a stick and poked it. It had mush mixed in with bones. I am fairly sure that what I saw combined with previous knowledge would confirm it as a owl pellet. Birds started to sing as    i got up to leave, they must not have liked me.

12:05 - Decided to get going, we would just have enough time to make it back. Wind was starting to pick up again.

12:10 - Going to stop and sit on a log but decided against it and kept walking due to many red ants and dead birds. Getting slightly warmer.

12:15 - Hear my partner gasp as he almost walks into a dear, footage was not very useful because they ran away before I could get any. There were more clouds in the sky now, but it was much hotter and the gentle breeze felt like it had gone away.

12:20 - Back at the bus. Time to go. Poor Jack.
